The 5th European Congress on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ECTH2023) was hosted by the Sociedad Española de Trombosis y Hemostasia (SETH) in the Valencia Conference Centre, which has been awarded the World’s Best Convention Centre both in 2018 and 2010. The Centre is located near excellent transport connections, as well as in close proximity to Valencia’s city centre.
In addition to selected abstract presentations, state of the art lectures and plenaries, we had guided ‘TEDx-style’ science showcases in the “Science, Fast and Furious” sessions and poster sessions.

Víctor Jiménez-Yuste
Víctor Jiménez-Yuste is Associate Professor of Medicine at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and Head of the Hematology Department at the Hospital Universitario La Paz (Madrid, Spain). After his degree in Medicine at the University of Valladolid, he specialized in hematology at the Hospital Universitario La Paz. He was awarded his PhD by the Autónoma University of Madrid where he completed his thesis studying haemophilia and HIV infection.
Professor Jiménez-Yuste is a member of the executive committee of the Spanish Society of Hematology and Hemotherapy. His lines of research include the treatment of hereditary coagulation disorders, ITP, and acquired hemophilia. He has published more than 200 articles in different journals on these topics.
Marguerite Neerman
Marguerite Neerman-Arbez obtained her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Geneva in 1994. During her post-doctoral training with Professor Stylianos Antonarakis, she became interested in the genetics of human bleeding disorders. In 2002, Dr. Neerman-Arbez was awarded a Career Development Professorship from the Swiss National Foundation. Since 2013 she is a Full Professor at the Department of Genetic Medicine and Development at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva. Marguerite Neerman-Arbez has received several international scientific prizes including in 2018 the Outstanding Investigator Award from the International Fibrinogen Research Society. Her current research focusses on translating genetic information obtained from next generation sequencing into clinical benefits for patients with congenital fibrinogen disorders by studying properties of fibrin clots prepared from patient samples and modelling genetic variants in the zebrafish.
Sabine Eichinger
Sabine Eichinger, MD, is professor in the field of hematology at the Medical University Hospital of Vienna, Austria. She received her training at the Medical University of Vienna and at the Harvard Medical School in Boston. She has vast expertise in thrombosis and haemostasis research and is a specialist in clinical studies. Dr. Eichinger chaired the Scientific and Standardizing Committee of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and was a board member of the European Hematology Association. She serves as associated editor of the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. She authored numerous highly ranked scientific articles and received several prestigious academic awards including the Esteemed Career Award of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis.
Benoit Ho-Tin-Noe
After completing a PhD in Hemostasis and Vascular Biology (Paris Diderot University) during which he studied the mechanisms of cellular plasminogen activation, Benoit Ho-Tin-Noé joined the laboratory of Dr Denisa Wagner in 2006, where he worked for 3 years as a postdoctoral fellow. There, he initiated a series of studies on the role of platelets in the maintenance of vascular integrity in inflamed organs and solid tumors. He was then recruited in 2009 as a tenured researcher by the French National Institute of Health & Medical Research (INSERM) to work in a cardiovascular research academic laboratory in Paris (The Laboratory for Vascular Translational Science). After 3 years as a junior investigator, he founded his own research group in 2012. Recently, his group joined the Opten Laboratory (Therapeutic Optimization in Neurology) at the Paris Faculty of Pharmacy. His research focuses on studying how thromboinflammation contributes to the pathophysiology of thrombotic diseases and on optimizing the efficacy and safety of thrombolytic and antithrombotic therapies.
Wolfram Ruf
Wolfram Ruf, M.D. studied Medicine in Giessen, Germany and is Professor of Immunology and Microbiology at Scripps Research and Scientific Director of the interdisciplinary, translational Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis (CTH) in Mainz Germany. Interested in tissue factor, coagulation protease biochemistry and signaling, his work is focused on cellular and receptor-mediated events of the coagulation pathway in thrombosis, hemostasis and thrombo-inflammatory processes. His current interests include the interplay of the coagulation pathways with the immune system and the role of these interactions in atherothrombosis, metabolic syndrome, autoimmunity, stem cell biology and cancer.
José Antonio Páramo
Dr. José Antonio Páramo is consultant in Hematology at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra (Pamplona Spain), being currently Head of the Hemostasis and Thrombosis Unit and Professor of Haematology in the School of Medicine at the University of Navarra. He has also been President of the Spanish Society of Hemostasis and Thrombosis (SETH) from 2016- to 2020. His area of expertise for patient care concerns hospitalised patients and outpatients with haemorrhagic and thrombotic problems. He has published more than 280 papers in journals with impact factor and he has directed 13 Doctoral thesis. Dr. Páramo presided over National Congress of the Spanish Society of Hematology and Hemostasis in 2007 and 2020 and the National Congress of Atherosclerosis in 2009.
Jose Rivera
Jose Rivera Pozo (November 28, 1962) obtained his degree in Chemistry at the University of Murcia in 1985 and his PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Valencia in 1990. Since 1991 is member of the staff at the Blood Transfusion Centre of Murcia (CRH), where he is responsible of the Quality System and blood processing departments. He is Associate Professor at the Department of Internal Medicine of the University of Murcia (Spain), and senior investigator of the Biomedical Research institute of Murcia (IMIB) and of the Spanish Network of Rare Diseases (CIBERER).
José Rivera leads at the CRH the research areas of blood component processing as well as basic and clinical research in platelet physiology and pathology. He has published around 150 articles in international peer-reviewed journals (Blood, JTH, T&H, Haematologica, Transfusion, Vox Sanguinis, Platelets, etc.), and more than 250 communications in national and international congresses (Index h:34, according to Scopus; h:41, according to Google Academico; 03/04/2023). His publications are available at https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4225-6840. José Rivera directed twenty Doctoral and Master Thesis achieving maximal qualification and has gained several research prizes in Spain. He has been the principal investigators in around twenty research projects granted by Public and private organizations, leading currently three of them. In 2015-2019 was one of the co-chair of the Platelet Physiology Subcommittee of the International Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis (ISTH). He is member of the ISTH, the Spanish societies of Hematology (SEHH), Thrombosis & Haemostasis (SETH) and blood transfusion (SETS), the Working Group on Blood Processing of the SETS, and the Platelet Disorders expert panel of CLinGe. Since 2008 he leads the Spanish Working Group on Diagnosis & Study of Inherited Platelet Disorders (GEAPC) and the Spanish registry of inherited platelet disorders (RETPLAC). José Rivera has multiple national and international research collaborations in the platelet field.
Nicola Curry
Dr. Nicola Curry is a Consultant Haematologist and Associate Professor at the Oxford Haemophilia & Thrombosis Centre. Her clinical interests cover the care of patients with inherited and acquired bleeding and thrombotic disorders, including the care of women with these disorders during pregnancy. Her main research interest is in the treatment of acquired coagulopathy, in particular traumatic coagulopathy and the role of early fibrinogen replacement therapy during active major haemorrhage and she has more recently been lucky enough to secure an MRC fellowship to study the role of the endothelium in the development of coagulopathy.
Roberta Gualtierotti
Prof. Roberta Gualtierotti is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Milan and Internal Medicine consultant at the Angelo Bianchi Bonomi Haemophilia and Thrombosis Center, directed by Prof. Flora Peyvandi.
She is specialised in Rheumatology and she earned her PhD in Experimental Pathology and Neuropathology from the University of Milan.
Prof. Gualtierotti’s research focuses on various aspects of inflammation and hemostasis, on the underlying mechanisms leading to the development and progression of hemophilic arthropathy, and the process of digitalization in medicine for the early detection of joint involvement in hemophilia.
She serves as a panel member for the international society on thrombosis and hemostasis (ISTH) Hemophilia guidelines. Additionally, she is a member of the musculoskeletal study group of associazione italiana centri emofilia (AICE). Prof. Gualtierotti is actively involved in promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities as a representative within the gender equality network at both the University and the Hospital she is affiliated with.
Sigrid Braekkan
Sigrid K. Brækkan is Professor in clinical epidemiology and group leader at the Thrombosis Research Group at UiT – The Arctic University of Norway. Her main research interest is the epidemiology and pathogenesis of venous thromboembolism (VTE). She has worked with large population-based studies investigating time trends in VTE incidence, the relationship between arterial and venous thrombosis, life-style factors for VTE, and cancer-related VTE.
Nuria Revilla
Dr. Revilla is a young hematologist who joined the Centro Regional de Hemodonación & Hospital Universitario Morales Meseguer, in Murcia (Spain), where she focused on Thrombosis, Inherited and Acquired Platelet Disorders. She earned a PhD from the University of Murcia in 2020 and she has been working since 2022 in the Thrombosis and Hemostasis Unit at Hospital Universitario Fundacion Jimenez Diaz in Madrid, Spain.
Javier Corral
Professor Javier Corral received his PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Salamanca in 1992.
From 1992 to 1995 he was post-doctoral fellow at the Medical Research Council and Laboratory of Molecular Biology, PNAC Division, at Cambridge (UK). Coming back to Spain, from 1996 to 2001 he worked as post-doctoral Scientist at the University of Murcia/SMS, until he moved again to the UK, becoming fellow of the department of Haematology, Trinity College, and scientific visitor of the Welcome Trust Centre, CIMR, at the University of Cambridge. Since 2002 Prof. Corral works at the University of Murcia (Spain), where in 2006 was appointed to his current position as Professor of Experimental Hematology at the Department of Medicine.
He is author of 215 articles in peer-reviewed journals. His publications have more than 8840 citations (Hirsch’s index 49), and is leading a research group on hemostasia and thrombosis, which includes 2 postdoc, 3 Ph.D.-students and 1 technician. He has supervised 19 PhD.
Prof. Corral is member of the Medicine Academy of Murcia, belongs to the editorial board of different journals, and has been vice-president of the Spanish Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis (SETH) for 8 years. Moreover, he is Head of CIBERER research group U765
He belongs to the Thrombosis Variant Curation Expert Panel from the ClinGen Project (NCBI, USA), and is Co-chair of the SSC Subcommittee on Physiological Anticoagulants and Thrombophilia of the ISTH.

Julie Rayes
Julie Rayes is an associate professor at the institute of cardiovascular sciences at the University of Birmingham and holds a British heart intermediate fellowship. She trained in the University of Paris VII Denis Diderot in France before undertaking postdoctoral positions in France and at the University of Birmingham. Julie’s research interests focus on understanding the bidirectional interactions between platelets and innate immune cells and their relevance in thrombo-inflammatory diseases. In particular, she investigates the mechanisms by which damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) released from red cells and innate immune cells alter the proinflammatory properties of platelets, independent of their classical thrombotic functions.
Pierre Mangin
Pierre Mangin obtained his PhD degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Strasbourg, France in 2003. He completed a post-doctoral internship in the Australian Centre for Blood diseases in the group of Shaun Jackson, Melbourne (2003-2006). He is currently the head of the Inserm research unit U1255, based in Strasbourg and entitled: biology and pharmacology of blood platelets: hemostasis, thrombosis and transfusion. He is Scientific Director of the French Blood Bank (EFS: Etablissement Français du sang)-Grand Est. He was the chair of the Scientific and Standardization Committee on biorheology of the ISTH from 2017 until 2022 and is currently theme leader on Diagnostics, OMICs, and Advanced Technologies Theme Committee for the isth. He is on the organizing committee of the French team of platelets and megakaryocytes and is on the panel of the Euplan meeting. His research is focused on providing a better understanding of the adhesive properties of blood platelets with a focus on the GPIb-IX complex, GPVI and integrins. His group is investigating the role of these receptors in hemostasis, arterial thrombosis and beyond.
Robert Ariëns
Robert Ariëns is a Professor of Vascular Biology at the University of Leeds, UK. Ariëns obtained a BSc in Biology from the University of Utrecht in 1990, and a PhD from the University of Maastricht in 1997. He was President of the British Society for Haemostasis and Thrombosis (2016-2018), President of the International Fibrinogen Research Society (2014-2018) and Head of the Discovery and Translational Science Department 2018-2021. He was elected to ISTH Council, Class 2026, and was Vice-President of the ISTH 2022 London Congress. Research of the Ariëns laboratory has a strong focus on mechanisms in thrombosis and haemostasis, with a particular interest in clot structure and function. He has published extensively in influential journals including Lancet, PNAS, JCI, Blood, ATVB, Circulation and JTH. He has mentored many early career scientists in the field.
Karen Vanhoorelbeke
Karen Vanhoorelbeke, PhD, is full professor at KU Leuven, Belgium, where she is principle investigator at the Laboratory for Thrombosis Research. In 2010 she worked in the lab of prof. dr. Tim Springer at Harvard Medical School, Boston as a visiting professor.
Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms by which the hemostatic proteins van Willebrand factor (VWF) and its cleaving enzyme ADAMTS13 contribute to health and disease. Her group performs fundamental research to understand the role of VWF and ADAMTS13 in hemostasis, bleeding and thrombosis and to unravel their mode-of-action. These findings form the basis for translational research lines where preclinical animal models are established to study disease pathology and new treatment strategies.
Her research is embedded in several national and international research projects. She was the coordinator of the Horizon2020 Marie Curie training network grant ‘PROFILE’ and is the coordinator of the Horizon Europe Marie Curie training network grant ‘TOLERATE’. In 2022, she received the Esteemed Career Award from the ISTH. She is author and coauthor of 200 scientific publications in international peer reviewed journals and is (co) promotor of 30 PhD students.
Christiane Druml
Christiane Druml was born in Vienna and studied law at the University of Vienna.
Since 2016 she is holding the UNESCO Chair on Bioethics at the Medical University of Vienna and serves as Director of the Department of Ethics, Collections and History of Medicine and Director of the Josephinum – Medical History Museum Vienna.
In 2007 she has been appointed President of the Austrian Bioethics Commission by the Austrian Federal Chancellor.
From 2011 to 2015 she was Vice-Rector for Clinical Affairs at the Vienna Medical University Before that she has been managing director of the Research – Ethics Committee at the Vienna Medical University (1992-2011). Christiane Druml was member of the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) of UNESCO from 2008 to 2015. In 2021 she has been awarded the City of Vienna Award for Medical Sciences.
